Sebago was founded in 1946 in Westbrook, Maine, by Daniel J. Wellehan and two local industrialists. Inspired by the nearby Sebago Lake, the first moccasin, the famous penny loafer, quickly became a bestseller. In 1970, the Docksides® sailing model was launched, marking another iconic success. Today, Sebago is synonymous with quality and tradition, distributed in 90 global markets.

In 1948, the first sailing shoe was created and sold to Uniroyal. By 1950, Sebago-Moc reached a revenue of $1 million, and by 1952, production rose to 2,000 pairs of shoes daily. In 1965, the company expanded into Europe thanks to Francisco Gaudier. Production of women's footwear began in 1963. In 1978, Ted Turner endorsed the Docksides® line. In 1981, the outdoor line Campsides® was launched. Sebago was the first American company to sponsor a boat in the O-Star Race in 1984, followed by other sailing sponsorships. The Drysides® line was introduced in 1994. In the 1990s, the company faced a crisis, culminating in 2003 with the acquisition by Wolverine World Wide, Inc. Since 2017, Sebago has been part of the BasicNet Group, with distribution in 90 global markets.
